10.28.07 - BAD BREATH OR HALITOSIS Disclaimer: I am neither a doctor nor a dentist. Please consult with your doctor, dentist, or hair dresser before changing your eating or tooth brushing habits or before following any advice your find on the internet. Introduction The human mouth. Most people tend not to think too much about their mouth unless they get a tooth ache or bit their tongue, but let's think about the mouth for a moment. It's the place where you shove all shorts of things (some more nutritious than others) in an effort to satisfy the two spoiled brats of the human body. The spoiled brats are your taste buds and that bottomless pit called your stomach. Are you ruled by the two spoiled brats? Even after a meal do you visit the refrigerator, open the door, and scan the food items in hopes of finding a quick fix? Food is the most powerful drug. It is even more powerful than sex. Think about it. Who wants to have sex on an empty stomach. Not only is food powerful, but it is also very important to all aspects of life. There is the old saying that says, "you are what you eat". I don't know if that saying was written before we humans discovered that we are composed of billions of cells, but the saying is so true. What we eat is used to create new cells. Therefore, do we really want to be built on cheap tacos, pizza, and hamburgers? No, we should invest in the infrastructure of our body by feeding it good nutritious food. On the subject of cells. Some people say we are composed of billions of cells, yet others say trillions. I guess nobody really knows how many cells the average human body contains because it would take too long to count them. For example it takes about 32 years to count to 1 billion (and that's without taking bathroom breaks, sleep breaks, meal breaks, vacation, etc.) Ok, now back to the subject. There are also people who say that the key to good health is good oral hygiene. That makes total sense considering that the human mouth is filled with bacteria. Now don't get me wrong. There are good and bad bacteria. Actually, I don't think bacteria are either good or bad (they don't have a brain, so how could they be good or bad). However, there are bacteria that are beneficial to humans and ones that are harmful or even deadly to us. Bacteria love to eat what we eat. So lots of the bacteria in our mouth comes from the food we eat. That's how we get food poisoning for example, but most bacteria don't even affect us. Have you ever eaten in a cafeteria? When you're done eating you dump your tray into a big smelly trash can. All that left over food quickly begins to smell bad even though it's basically as fresh as it was when you ate it. Now if you think about it, your mouth is just like the trash can (filled with left over food). What do most people do after they eat? Most people just leave the left over food particles in their mouth to rot and feed the bacteria. The smart ones put a mint or a stick of gum into their mouth which actually helps get rid of some of the excess food by producing more saliva, which washes some of the left over food into the acid pit (your stomach). The gum also helps to loosen some food particles from your teeth. The gum and the mint may help, but they are not the solution alone. Bad Breath 10.28.07 - My plan for fighting bad breath will be coming shortly. I haven't decided whether I'm going to write a book about bad breath or not. However, I will put some of my tips online. Do you have bad breath? Of course you do. Everyone has bad breath. It's just a matter to what degree of bad breath we have. For example, someone might have minty fresh breath, but that's only because she or he has rinsed with some type of breath freshener that masks what little bit of bad breath they may have. However, if that person has really strong bad breath, then the not even the breath freshener will help. My point is that even the best breath has a little bit of bad breath lurking away somewhere in that person's mouth. Did you know that most of your bad breath comes from the area of your tongue and teeth that are closet to your throat? The best way to fight bad breath is to brush often (after every meal) and to do a good job on those back molars and to brush the back of your tongue. You might want to gently brush the roof of your mouth as well. It's easier for women to keep their mouths clean because they can conveniently pack a tooth brush and mini tooth paste in their purse. I guess guys could keep a toothbrush and paste in the glove compartment of their car. 10.28.07 - MORE TO COME - PLEASE MAKE A BOOKMARK |
